Vermicomposting is composting with worms. It is perfect for apartment dwellers, classrooms, anyone lacking a yard, or as an additional method of composting food refuse. I have one in my kitchen.
A special type of worm is used within vermicomposting, called Red Wrigglers which are especially useful for composting because of how much they chomp through. Each worm eats half its own consignment in food and bedding each morning. They will stay in their bin provided conditions are tolerable, as they hate table lamp and vibrations.
Besides the worms, you will need a bin for them to live in and bedding stuff such as shredded paper. There needs to be holes surrounded by the top for air ventillation of excess moisture. Similar things can go into a vermicomposter as into a backyard composter. Generally, the worms are feed your organic material once a week.
As the worms get through your garbage, they digest it and produce castings. These castings are the finished compost can also be used in alike way as humus from backyard composters.
Make sure eight to ten holes (approximately1 cm or 1/4") are drilled in the bottom ofthe bin for all right drainage. Place the binon blocks with a tray underneath.
Now you need to muse about bedding for the worms. Red worms can survive and breed in manykinds of bedding materials. Remember that the red worm is a compost worm and will eat its own bedding. Materials such as straw,grass clippings, dried leaves, chopped plants,dampened peat moss, aged animal manures,ground cardboard or shredded rag can allbe used. Bedding can be mixed (e.g. half straw,half dried leaves). The crucial thing is tokeep the bedding as moist as a well-wrungsponge. You can form a good worm bin from the plans on the website listed below. The worm bin should be kept within a cool, shady place, not the sun where they will cook. Think about the places you find worms and try to replicate that environment.

We have heavy Styrofoam cooler, buried almost up to the top lid within a cool damp place. Keep covered of course and supply moisture if it needs it.If you decide to stop using it be sure to remove the container from the ground.
