I actually live surrounded by a small town about 20 minutes from Durham!

Durham is, honestly, one of the WORST cities in NC. Not of late for gays but in general. It have the highest murder rate in the state. Not a fun place. I'd suggest going to Triangle Town Center precinct in Raleigh. There are always tons of citizens shopping there and it's mostly high university and college kids. I was there in advance tonight with a friend and actually get hit on by a guy who rung me up at one of the stores. Other than TTC there's really no place other than school or facebook/myspace. NC isn't really a gay friendly state. The with the sole purpose gay-friendly cities are Chapel Hill, Greensboro, and Asheville because they're all liberal college towns.
